It seems that summer 2016 isn’t going out without a final blaze of glory, in the form of the heatwave currently sweeping much of the UK. This, of course, makes it an ideal time to be enjoying your conservatory.

We know it won’t be long before autumn kicks in properly, bringing with it cooler temperatures and longer evenings. But while summer lingers, it could be a great time to give your conservatory a makeover so that it’s an even more welcoming sanctuary in which to relax.

However big or bijou your extension is, whatever its shape or design, there are plenty of things you can do to make the most of your home improvement:

•    Time for a furniture upgrade?

Could your furniture do with a refresh or be rearranged? Maybe you could put a sofa bed in your conservatory if you know you’re putting up guests? Alternatively, consider breaking up your space with new shelving or a screen or two. This could create, for example, a dining area with chairs and table in one part of your conservatory, and an informal area with bean bags and scatter cushions in another.

For smaller structures, think furniture with hidden storage compartments to maximise space, or shelving to store things away from the floor.

•    Light and day

These days, you have myriad choices for illuminating your conservatory, from pendant lights to fairy lights to spotlights or even, if you’re really splashing out, a chandelier. Lighting will take you from daytime into a cosy evening as the autumn nights draw in. Think about what you need for your space, what’s already there, and how it could be improved.
Equally, consider what accessories could give your conservatory a fresh look. How about adding some scatter cushions or throws, or green plants to help bring the outdoors inside?
Lastly, candles are another way of lighting your conservatory while giving off a delicious aroma that will create a unique ambience.
